DVD Review: Frasier: The Complete Eighth Season

The character of Frasier Crane was a fixture on television for 20 years. Actor Kelsey Grammer first played the role on Cheers in 1984. When Cheers ended its run in 1993, Grammer continued the role on Frasier, which premiered later that same year. Frasier was nominated for a total of 37 Emmys during the series' 11-year run, by far the most in television history. (The Mary Tyler Moore Show took home 29 during seven seasons.) Kelsey Grammer was nominated for an Emmy in the Best Lead Actor in a Comedy Series category in eight of the series' 11 seasons, winning three awards. Grammer was also nominated twice for an Emmy in his role as Frasier Crane when he was on Cheers and once for a guest spot on Wings as the same character.

Dr. Frasier Crane is a psychiatrist who hosts a radio advice program in Seattle. Roz Doyle (Peri Gilpin) is Frasier's producer and close friend. His abrasive, retired cop father, Martin (John Mahoney) lives with him, disturbing what could be a peaceful existence. When Martin moved in, he brought Eddie, a Jack Russell terrier with him. Martin also brought along a live-in physical therapist named Daphne (Jane Leeves). Frasier's brother, Niles (David Hyde Pierce), also a psychiatrist, is extremely neurotic and highly competitive. Niles had been harboring a secret crush on Daphne until she learned of his true feelings in season seven of the show.

Frasier: The Complete Eighth Season
has arrived on DVD with all 24 episodes from the series eighth year, which aired from October 24, 2000 to May 22, 2001. Season eight finds Niles and Daphne finally together. The season begins where the series' seventh year ended. "And The Dish Ran Away With The Spoon" finds Niles and Daphne running away from Daphne's wedding in a Winnebago, but they decide to go home and face the music. Donny decides to sue Daphne for leaving him at the altar, along with Frasier for helping bring Niles and Daphne together.

Frasier's love life remains in flux. In "The Bad Son," when Frasier's car breaks down, he and Roz decide to take the bus. There, Frasier spots a pretty woman he tries to start a conversation with. Even though he injures himself, Frasier refuses to give up his pursuit of the woman. In "Legal Tender Love And Care," Frasier starts dating the lawyer who is defending Daphne and him against Donny's lawsuit. Frasier's interludes with women never work out the way he plans. In one episode, Fraser intends to take his girlfriend Claire on a romantic trip to Belize. To his horror, Martin, Niles and Daphne are coming along too!

Season eight of Frasier is full of funny episodes: Niles' attempts to make a half-court shot at a Supersonics game, his jealousy when Daphne meets a dog lover, and Frasier's continuing string of bad luck.

While Frasier: The Complete Eighth Season has no special features, all 24 episodes are presented in full-screen format and the picture is clean and crisp. The sound is Dolby digital 2.0 surround sound and includes English subtitles. It is a must-have for any fan of the show.
